Game in Action
Dragon Ship offers everything you’d expect of a Viking themed slot. There are shields and battle axes on the reels, horns, treasure chest and the fiery dragon masthead wild as well as a Viking warrior. Even the generic card symbols are well done. There’s a lot of detail to like here, but we particularly loved the movements of the sea that form the backdrop of the reels. One does get the impression of being aboard a dragon ship.
The sound effects really add to the atmosphere as well. The sea, the creaking of planks underfoot and some dramatic music whenever you win something. It’s all very well done. As a volatile slot, you’ll find winnings few and far in between, but five of a kind of even the lowest paying symbols give you 100 coins and we’ve gotten those a few times. Spin in five of the Viking warrior and you’ll get a nice payout of 2,500 coins.
Bonuses
You’ll be on the lookout for two features. The first and infinitely more frequent one is the pick me feature. Spin three treasure chest scatters onto reels 1, 3 and 5 and those three chests will appear prominently on the screen. Pick one of them and look forward to a nice payout. It’s possible to get up to 150x your bet here.
Then there’s the fiery dragon masthead wild, which appears stacked on the reels. Whilst it appears on all reels, you will need the wild fully stacked on reel 1 and 5 in order to trigger the free spin feature. And therein lies the problem, because it seems nearly impossible to manage. We’ve not had any luck here and eventually closed the game somewhat frustrated.
If you do manage to get those stacked wilds locked onto the reels, you’ll get 15 free spins and the wild reels will remain sticky throughout. With a little luck you could get a few 5-of-a-kind wins here.

Summary
Of course, Dragon Ship is a highly volatile slot. What keeps you going are the treasure chest wins, which show up every once in a while and tend to be worthwhile. But getting to the free spins is unreasonably difficult and therefore disappointing.
That would also explain the surprisingly low RTP of only 94%. Play’n GO usually does a lot better than this and only hardcore fans will give Dragon Ship a go. Or those who are looking for a real thrill, which Dragon Ship can undoubtedly provide. Still, it is quite beautiful at least.
