About Suptopia Slots

Subtopia is another underwater themed slot from Net Entertainment. They have several, but they are all pretty different and Subtopia is probably one of the earliest versions. This one is loosely based on Jules Verne’s "20,000 leagues under the Sea" as you have a Captain Nemo type character on the reels. The slot looks somewhat steampunk inspired, too, but with a more modern twist to it. The characters are all interesting here and the gameplay has one or two aces up the sleeves as well. With multipliers randomly awarded, this slot can award big wins even in the base game.

Whilst Subtopia is hardly NetEnt’s most beautiful slot, it does look quite good. You have five interesting characters on the reels: the captain, a diver, a sassy mechanic and two explorers, one male and one female. The remaining symbols are made up of surprisingly modern looking playing card symbols. You do get the feeling as if you’re in a submarine, looking out through the transparent reels on what might well be Atlantis. There aren’t that many well known sunken cities, after all.

The sound effects are reminiscent of what one might expect on a diving adventure. You can hear pinging sounds and other mechanical noises as well as an alarm here and there. It fits in well with the theme and is never annoying.

Whilst the slot only has 20 paylines, the high paying symbols pay pretty well in 5-of-a-kind combinations. The scatters also pay as soon as you have at least 2 of them and the more you get, the bigger the reward.

Bonuses

Subtopia lives off of two main features. The random multiplier is awarded in the base game. Here you have to pay attention to the multiplier metre at the bottom of the reels on the right hand side. It jumps around randomly and stops on 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier before the reels stop spinning. Whilst it will often sit on 1x, jumps to the higher multipliers are definitely happening often enough and can provide big wins.

The compass scatters will trigger the free spins just as soon as you get at least three of them. You’ll get coin reward to kick off the free spins depending on how many scatters you had. Then the free spins commence and there is no set number of how many you might get.

Instead you will notice a multiplier symbol, which appears on reel 5. Whenever it shows up, it will award you the next highest multiplier for all future wins, but once it has been there three times, you don’t want to see it again, because it will land on the skull symbol on the last appearance, which ends the free spins.

During the free spins, you’ll start with a 2x multiplier, which then climbs to 4x and finally 6x before you get kicked off. It’s possible to only get 3 spins, if the multiplier symbol shows up on your first three spins. But we’ve also played 10 spins in one round, which is definitely the better outcome.

Summary

Subtopia is not particularly feature rich, but the random multiplier can be quite worthwhile in the base game and we found the free spins to come around surprisingly often. Triggering them three times in 100 spins is not unusual. Considering that there is no set number of free spins and you might only get 3 or 4 in one go, this is just as well.

Big wins are rare in Subtopia, but they are definitely possible. Frequent free spins mean that you won’t get too bored, even though the feature can sometimes disappoint. Subtopia is definitely worth playing every once in a while.
