If you’re looking to travel back in time to the best days of football, look no further than Shoot!, the newly re-released Microgaming slot. It is based on the famous UK football magazine, which had its heyday in the 70s and 80s, when football was still football and not yet today’s money-making machine. The look of the reel symbols certainly reflects the era and features some of the greatest football players ever to run across the field: Pele, Maradonna, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Best and others.
Thus there is much going on on the reels, which makes you wonder at times what you are actually seeing. But it’s definitely not boring, which is a plus. There are also meat pies, rattles and football balls among other symbols. The Shoot! logo stands in as a Wild and Trading Cards are featured on the Bonus symbol.
You have 5 reel and 50 paylines, which makes wins relatively frequent, but never very generous. You do get to choose how many paylines you want to play, though, which is always good for budget conscious people.
Bonuses
There is essentially one Bonus Game that can be triggered by collecting at least three Bonus Symbols anywhere on the screen. Once that happens, you’ll land on a trading card screen, where you are asked to pick among 12 football trading cards. You’ll get a total of four picks here and can win the following:
- Random Coin Wins
- Free Spin Bonus
- Magazine Bonus
Since you have four picks, you will definitely win some coins, but you may also win one of the other two bonus features on top of that. In theory it is possible to win both bonus features and coins, but that’s fairly unlikely. When we played the slot, we won coins and the Magazine Bonus.
Winning the Free Spins is more likely, however, and here you’ll get anywhere between 10 and 35 free spins. There’s a 2x multiplier on all wins, which is nice.
The Magazine Bonus is another pick me game, which will take you to a screen with a dozen Shoot! magazine covers. You’ll get once more four picks, which will mostly see you take coin prizes home. There are also Red Cards hidden and if you get one of those, you get booted out of the bonus game and will have to collect your prizes.

Summary
Shoot! is definitely a homage to football as it was and can be considered fan service to those of us, who really love football and have loved it for a long time. Having those legendary players show up on the reels will likely make you a bit nostalgic.
Wins are fairly frequent, but also relatively small. It’s not too difficult to trigger the bonus game, but you can hit stretches of nothing much happening at all. At least you get to define your budget accordingly. The bonus game is rather simple, which is probably owed to the fact that this slot is not exactly new and therefore not exactly innovative. Football fans will like the slot, but it likely won’t appeal to many people beyond that.
